Good Guys 10th Southwest Nationals

Spent the day at West World in Scottsdale at the Good Guys Car Show. Sunny day with some high overcast sliding in the afternoon. Didn't take too many pictures this time, but the best in show for me was this very shinny 1936 Ford.
One of six built as a demonstration for what was at the time a new material.

I also had the pleasure of meeting an (Internet) acquaintance from NE who shares my enthusiasm for Studebakers. I was able to examine his 1952 Starliner Hard Top. Here is a picture of the restored dash.

Puyallup Good Guys Car Show 2011

Ventured over to the Puyallup Fair Grounds for the 24th National Pacific Northwest Good Guys Car Show on Saturday July 23, 2011. These picture are in no particular order. I am sure there were cars there that were worth far more than the ones I chose to photograph, but my tastes my own.
I have been a long time Studebaker sympathizer so with out farther explanation this 1950 Studebaker custom makes the cut.
This two tone 1956 Studebaker Champion appeared to be an unrestored original which presented nicely.

Here is a stylish shot of a custom 1960 Edsel convertible, very long, wide and low.

Although not original to this car here is a nice example of the first generation Studebaker V8, a 232 c.i. overhead valve engine which produces 120hp. It is installed in a 1955 Studebaker wagon.

Now this little green 1960 Lark was my favorite. It has only 4000 miles and has had only one new set of tires (just this year); a new battery and carpets were added new this year. Otherwise it is original.

A 1951 Studebaker Starlite coupe custom, speaks for itself.

Here is 1961/62 T-Bird custom with a 1960 Ford Star liner roof, made for lovely lines.

Ah a Jaguar custom low ride, I have seen this around off and on for years, never before have seen it sitting still were I could look it over.

Now I know this one, it is a 1947 Studebaker Business Coupe with a 1950 front end among many other modifications. The paint is actually purple but my camera can't capture it.

Arizona March Madness, Studebaker Style

South Mountain Park near Phoenix was the seen for the Grand Canyon Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club Saturday March 19, 2011.
Here is an original unrestored 1937 Studebaker Commander, which arrived with six passengers.

A 1940 and 1941 Customs, the black 41 has a supercharged 289ci Avanti power train.

It was recently pointed out to me it is 2011; I'll admit I hadn't looked at my watch since 2005. This year so far has been ok. Paige tried to go to Egypt but ended up in Amsterdam. Our kids were able to join her there for a week of winter sightseeing. We have happy hour most afternoons with friends and the occasional neighborhood potluck dinner. For me I don't hike very often but do ride the motorcycle on Tuesdays with friends and ride my bicycle every few days for 10 to 20 miles. I have rebuilt a pantry that was too tight to fit in it's space. I know it doesn't sound like much but for the most part is more than enough.

Sunrise sunset or 12 miles the hard way. We (Gary and I) stepped onto the trail at 7:00 AM and were done at 5:30 PM.

Sunrise: heading back to the Carney Springs trail.

Superstition Mountain: High ground, 5000ft.

Would have been done sooner if I wasn't so old. This hike was supposed to be tough and having know just how tough I would not have gone.

The track climbs from 2200 ft to 5000 ft and back to 2300 ft, with as many as 18 summits along the way.

The destination was the saddle to the right of the rocks in the center.

The route is only a couple of miles as the crow flies.

The elevation change was 1320 ft.

Just doesn't get much better.

It was in the low 40s when started and in the mid 70s by the time we returned.

Good Guys Fall National Car Show 2010

West World, Scottsdale AZ: A pleasant day with partly sunny skies and temps in the 70s and thousands of cars. The public parking lots were packed by 10AM. At $5 a pop to park and $18 to get into the event there was a lot of money changing hands.

Rode to Casa Grande AZ to see the Copper State Fly-In. There were many old, not so old and new planes on display. Many were taxing through the flight line giving attendees a close and personal experience.

Trudie's Farewell

Our friend Trudie is leaving Superstition Lookout RV Resort Tuesday for MN and then FL.

She has wintered here for many years and will be missed.

We gathered for a farewell pot-luck. John tested his Margarita machine, which is constructed of a couple of buckets, some PVP piping and valve, with a kitchen garbage disposal (assumed to be new).

Fifth and Final Leg Back to AZ

Day 5 started with an orange sunrise. There were thunder showers predicted for the hole state. We encounter showers periodically through the day and some wind too. It was a relatively short day (less than 250 miles). We arrived in Apache Junction about half past noon and have made a small dent in the setup, there will be more time tomorrow. It will be good to hold still for a while.

Day Four on the Road

Many more miles of NV scenery, inter-spiced with nothing of particular interest. Another long day with some wind and rain and a long wait in line (11 miles) to cross Hoover Dam. The new Dam By-Pass Bridge is nearly ready to open. This will be out last drive across the Dam. All in all not too bad. Made it onto I-40 from SR-93 with being hit by anyone. Hope to see old friends tomorrow.

Ely NV

Nevada so much to see and like west TX much of it looks like the rest. We traveled from I-80 to US-50 via NV-278; it is a good road just not wide and has little or no shoulders. Good we didn't need them. Only 276 miles to day but with the time change and the need to do laundry a good thing. Up until to day the Jeep and bike didn't look to bad, but now it may be easier to get new ones than to clean these up.

As we dropped the last couple of miles into Ely this train passed going the other way.

Winnemucca NV

Seemed like a long day, traveled 362 miles from Prineville OR to Winnemucca NV. Very little wind and lots of warm sunshine. We are hole-up for the night in High Desert RV Park on the east end of town; all fueled up for a smooth getaway in the morning.

Prineville OR, Maybe More Than You'd Expect

Anna and Jim took us on a rolling tour of the area today and it was a beautiful day. We visited a view point in Bend OR called Pilot Butte Sate Park, with a 360 view of the surrounding mountains. We saw Bends new river front development area the Mt Washington area, which is to Bend as Scottsdale is to Phoenix.

The Big R Store, ahhhhh, somehow is is comforting to know it is still here.

This one is for Maggie.
Redmond OR was next followed by lunch at the Red Dog Depot (excellent). Our last stop was Smith Rock State Park before retuning to our dogs.

The Valley of the Moss is Dying

It is the heat and lack of rain for the past four or five days that may be responsible. The Great Pacific Northwest is in the midst of a heatwave (pushing 90); it may last a couple of more days. Hopefully the moss can hang in just a little longer. Hold a good thought that it will not go on much longer as our moss is the foundation of all that is green here in the PNW.

Ocean Shores: Epilogue

Tim, our host, took 2 pounds of excellent hamburger and crafted his version of a single by-pass burger. Each patty was stuffed with brie cheese prior to grilling. Once cooked to perfect medium-rare they were topped with Cheddar cheese. We were then allowed to construct the finished burger to our own tastes. Some light weights choose not eat the whole thing.

Kitty Quinn likes to be on top.

We played double 12 Chickie Dominoes, eat too much, some when shopping and some rode go-carts. There was spinning, napping and did I mention eating. Thanks to Tim and Tory and Tim's folk for the property loan.

We have slipped out of Bremerton for a few days and are camping with friends in Ocean Shores WA for a few days.

Sunday we took a ride into town and the beach just to blow the stink off.

Tory doesn't care to have her picture taken especially when I am driving.

It has been raining the last couple of days but it is getting better.

Tim is along for the ride, a good sport for sure.

Glad I haven't tried this on the motorcycle.

2010BC: Epilogue

Change nothing, except adding a few additional riders to have shared the experience. It was sunny and warm, lava hot, chilly and even a little wet on occasion. We were seldom lost and never in the wrong place. The route took us through every variation of British Columbia's terrain and summer climate. Jasper NP and Banff NP (Alberta CA) exceeded my expectations in every way. Last year we rode the Riding To The Sun Road in Glacier NP (MT) and it was beautiful but the Canadian version of these mountains, valleys are more accessible, easier to experience and go on and on. The traffic moves easily through the parks with many large pull-offs and passing lanes. Kudos to the Canadians for the cleanliness of your highways, litter was virtually non-existent and even the truck tire "road alligator" were nearly extinct, having seen only one during the entire ride in Canada. I can only assume they have more stringent laws governing the quality of truck tires. There were bugs but nearly as many as I had expected. Our riding group has two members who make all possible, Steve who plans the route and Rob who make the reservation. Their efforts were spot on. This one was good enough that it will be worthy of a redo. Thanks to good friends and family who all played a part in making it possible.

Day 8 wraps up the Canadian Adventure with a ride from Princeton BC to the border at Sumas, then south on SR-9. I5 and the Washington State ferry from Edmonds to Kingston and Kitsap County.

Day 7: Naksup BC to Princeton BC via Needles (free ferry ride), Vernon, Kelowna, Carmi, Osoyoos. Weather was perfect, roads were as good as it gets, even for Rob. After checking in in Princeton we rode out to Tuameen just because we could.

Riding from Valemount to Invermere we crossed into Alberta and back in to BC; change time zones too. Nothing I can say will adequately describe today's ride. I can say the weather was perfect, roads and traffic were excellent; scenery was over the moon. Jasper National Park and Bamff National Part are in a word stunning. I hope these pictures will do them justice.

Mile after mile the views tried to suppass the last. For myself this was exactly the reason I ride a motorcycle.

From Merritt BC to Valemount BC, we have ridden through the rolling scrub and entered the Canadian Rockies, with forests and peaks at every turn.

Day 3 Naniamo BC to Merritt: Including 90 min ferry ride and many miles of wonderful scenery and roads.

Our ride took us from the salt air and seawater, Douglass firs and cedars of the coast to the Ponderousa pines of the Okanogan. It was perfect on the coast this morning and warm east of Whistler to Merritt.

Departed Mountain Home at 8AM (MT) stopped at Camping World in Meridian ID then rolled across into Oregon; into Washington. We were briefly above the snow line on I-84.

These are mountains of Wallowa-Whitman National Forrest as seen from I-84 just before reaching Baker City OR.

We are hold up in Prosser WA for the night. Filled the propane tank and was stunned by the $2.54 a gallon. Had some local pizza for dinner. A good day!

Heading North: Day 3

An easy day on US-93 northbound through Nevada. It is amazing what a good job Nevada does with their roads. We are safe and warmer in Mountain Home ID tonight.

These roads are not exactly ideal for motorcycles.

This picture was taken the morning of day 4, welcome sunshine but the temperature is just above freezing, burrrrrrrrrrrrr! On the upside look at that RV site, now that is a pull-thru. There are several feet behind the Jeep and in front of the coach too. The pavement is dead on level and there is 20ft of lawn between each pad, wish all of the RV Park industry could see this. Kudos to Mountain Home RV Park in MH Idaho.

Heading North: Day 2

The road less traveled, less drama too. The scenery is not what generally comes to mind when I think of Nevada, and in a good way. Today was smooth and the climate has changed. Yesterday it was in the low 90s and today, from a morning start in the 70s, it rose briefly. Then it began to decline and about 25 miles from Ely NV it dropped from the 50s into the 30s and then rose to the 40s again. Still a good days travel.

It has been interesting, forgot how bad California is at maintaining their roads, then there is the wind which tried to rip the slide-out topper off the side as we approached Boulder City NV. With help from Scott we secured it for the remainder of the day. If the wind keeps up in the morning I'll have to tie it off again.

Shed Shuffle Second Stage

Shed Shuffle First Stage

So it begins, we need more storage space and a new park resident shows up with a shed that won't fit his site; we make an offer and find a buyer for our shed. New guy has a shed built on his site. We unload our shed, placing all our GVS under the awning, to and move it to make room for the next shed.

A short ride and a couple of turns followed by a safe landing. Once the new shed is loaded with all his the GVS we will execute stage two, stay tuned.

Wildlife!

Deer, no, rabbits (not all that wild), squirrels, no, chipmunks, no, but SNAKES, now that's wild! Paige is now here officially under duress. This specimen (21" long) was found on the patio about 8:30PM and was just passing by.
I was SO much happier thinking the snakes all stayed asleeep til I left Arizona each year... no matter what time of year that might be. I am officially freaked out!

Bisbee AZ Road Trip

The three amigos made a two day road trip to the deep south of Arizona via Globe, Bylas, Safford, Wilcox and Pirtleville. There was good food in Wilcox at Big Tex BBQ. We stayed overnight in the old town of Bisbee, which was at one time the largest city between St. Louis and San Francisco. The Bisbee Grill provided another excellent meal after refreshments in our hotels (Copper Queen) Saloon. Our weather was perfect and the spring rains have brought out the desert flowers everywhere. From Bisbee we traveled through Tombstone, Sierra Vista, Patagonia, Rio Rico, Green Valley, Tucson and Florence. We again found good food in Patagonia at Mercede's Mexican Restaurant.

Ample parking in Tombstone. I missed the memo on Black and red shirts so I couldn't be in the shot.

It seems Arizona Public Service (APS) (thanks Bob) had pulled the plug on Tombstone as there was no electrical power, no cooking, cash registers etc. Makes for a slow day. I wonder if ASP knows these people have guns and have in the past used them to to resolve issued of the public good.

Rode to Prescott AZ via Wickenburg and Mayer. Weather was perfect and there were 12 miles of road illustrated to the left that made the whole 340 miles. Sometimes the least little thing can set everything just right.

First Arizona Spring National Good Guys Car Show

On the up side it was a beautiful day. There were hundreds of cars, trucks and vendors. The swap meet area contained many items and complete cars; several of the cars were forsale at the fall Good Guys. After two or three hours it all becomes a blur of paint and chrome. On the down side parking cost $5, admission $18 and lunch $15 (vendor burger, fries and water).

Johnny Cash had nothing on this one. No two parts of this one came from the same car.

Mesa Bike Night

Ventured out last evening with a few biker friends from the park to hung out on Main St in Mesa.

There were 4 or 5 blocks blocked off with bikes parked along the curbs and the center dividers.

Live music in the center of each block staggered sides so there was little or no overlap.

The newest sculpture on Main St can be seen just to the left of the green light.

Weeks Recap

Tuesday (3/2/10) rode 300 miles for lunch and pie. There was snow along the road sides between Camp Verde and Payson; it was cold. Lunch in New River was good; pie in Payson was very good.

Wednesday celebrated a birthday, thank you to all those who wished me well.

Thursday returned to Flatiron for more pictures and to prove to myself the previous trip was not a fluke. Got to explore the top this trip. The Siphon Draw waterfall was flowing (a little) water. A good week so far.

Flatiron

Ever since we first viewed the Superstition Mts (2005), which are just east of our Arizona winter hide-out I've wondered is I would ever get to see the view from the top. Well today with my faithful Canadian guide and I made the trek to Flatiron. If you look closely in the first two photos to the most distant rock, that is Flatiron. We stepped off from the 2000' trail head about 7:30 AM and reached the 4861' Flatiron at 10:00 AM. I had made one prior attempt a couple years ago and learned that I was not ready for the full effort. I am glad to say this year was different. It was still a tough climb and descent for me. Enjoy the pictures.

The weather as turned around with valley temperatures in the 70s, so today nine of us (on eight bikes) rolled out for Payson AZ with the return via SR-188 through Globe and Superior, for a sunny 203 miles.

Another Day in the Saddle

A sunny but cool days ride to San Manuel AZ. It is a sleepy little town, which was built in, the late 50s as a mining town but the mine closed a while back and it shows. The streets and housing was done by Del Web who is/was a major player in the retirement community development industry. San Manuel looks like it needs some revitalization. There is a diner on Main St, which bares no sign; serves basic burgers, fries, tacos and ice cream. According to the menu posted on the wall it is called Mel's Drive In. We (seven of us) made the 200 mile round trip with ease.

Catchup

Since our return to AZ from Maryland we have been busy doing the usual winter activities for the most part. Gypsy had another episode with a "foreign body" and another (second) surgery but is going very well. Can't thank our daughter-in-law enough for all her selfless help with Gypsy. Paige is making beads, knitting and spinning when she isn't planning happy hour with our neighbors and themed pot-lucks. I've been hiking a couple of times, riding the motorcycle nearly every week and watercolor painting with the painting group here in the park. One of my motorcycle riding friends had his son visit from Ohio last week; with the loan of a bike there was a series of group rides each day except Wednesday. I missed Monday's ride due to another commitment. There is enough going on to make the days pass quickly.

Arizona Bound/Snow Bound

Departed Silver Spring MD this morning about 5:15AM in a freezing rain on 495, drove through snow in Fairfax on 66, then slush and snow on 81. By the time we got to 40 the pavement was wet and the rain intermittent. Made 700 miles today (Kingston Springs TN) and all things considered that wasn't bad.

Washington National Cathedral and lunch

Just two Metro trains and a brisk 1 mile walk from Silver Spring is the Washington National Cathedral, built on a hill (mountain to Easterners) northwest of the Capital Mall. Built with private monies on private land the name "National" does not nor should it imply any official affiliation with the US government. Construction began in 1907 and completed in 1990.

Downtown again with a stop and hike through Arlington National Cemetery, which included the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Solder, Gen. Lee's home, the Kennedy Memorial, including Teddy's grave recently added nearby. Then a short drive across the river to Constitution Ave and a walk to the Vietnam Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. The pictures speak louder than anything I could say.

Ginger is still on schedule but barely tolerant. According to Paige our greatest concern is the lack of lime and tonic water. Ethan loves his mother and will walk out to get some if necessary.

Spoke to soon, after settling last night new motel guests arrived in the room next to us about 9pm. They also had two dogs and it took them 90 min to move into the room. Dozens of door slams and knocking at their door, etc. Those of you who know our dogs know this is not good. So at 3am one of the neighbor dogs needed to go out so it started again. We were up early and on our way by 5:30. Hope we didn't wake them. Covered 645 miles today and still no weather issues so far. From here (Bulls Gap TN) to Silver Spring MD is a mere 440 miles so a much shorter day tomorrow.

Today finds us in Arkadelphia AR, the end of our second day of travel east. So far so good, the dogs are behaving better than usual (not great but better) and the weather, while cold has been dry and easy driving (the Jeep). Thursday this week I and some friends rode north from AJ through Globe to Show Low, than west to Payson and back to AJ with lunch in Show Low. Good weather, little traffic and smooth roads; at just over 300 miles a very good day. Now today a few of us rode to an annual car show (the 22 year). It was a small but nice showing.

We are safely tucked away for the winter in spot #150. The first full day here, I did laundry (the fun that never ends) and it mostly consisted of all of my long sleeve t-shirts, a sweat shirt or two and socks. Lots of socks. Now we are dressing in sleeveless t-shirts and shorts, have the A/C on most of the day and sometimes all night too. Our towels dry after a shower in about 20 minutes just hanging in the bathroom. In Washington, we rotate them on the little space heater for much of the day to get them dry for the next go round. No more water out of the tap.... AZ water is not for the faint of heart and is a sure way to ruin a good pot of coffee. We don't get the really cold water when we do turn on the faucet. You know how in the fall and winter when you run the water for a few minutes and it's icy cold? You can almost bathe in the water that comes out of the cold tap here. But it is now warm enough for iced tea... yum, with water from the reverse osmosis machine at the front of the park. My friend Tory introduced me to a really refreshing blend this summer... of course I'll have to send away for more when I run out. My friend Tory introduced me to many fun things this summer!
It's nearly the end of October and as I sit here in shorts with the A/C humming, I think "it's just about time for fruitcake" and then I think " I wonder if I will have to crank up the A/C while I have the oven on baking said fruitcake?"
I went out the door of the coach Saturday morning and found a roadrunner standing in the shade in of the doorway of the shed... they're supposed to be good luck- I think the small critters who used to live around here would beg to differ!
I'm missing family and friends up north but enjoying the catching up with friends I haven't seen since last spring.

Quartzsite AZ, No not quite, Apache Junction at Last

Didn't seem to make much sense when we got there so the made the run all the way to Apache Junction (552 miles). Arrived in the dark just before 8PM and had lots of good help making a smooth landing. Time to settle down until the morning when the real work of cleanup can begin.

Redding CA to Lost Hills CA, 400 miles of smooth sailing, in my mind. I-5 is in a sad state in CA, pun intended. As interstate freeways go it used to the pride of the system but now you have to wonder where all the money went for maintenance. Good to be this far. There is a lot of commercial truck traffic on the road and in Oregon I saw both logging trucks, loaded, and trains with finished lumber, if it means anything it could be a good sign of the times.

Parting is such sweet sorrow

My friend Jane(who I will be happy to see) wrote a post about the bittersweet parting. Leaving family and friends in one place and going to meet friends and family you haven't seen for a while in another. We're about to do just that. As much as I will enjoy seeing my 'winter friends' in the park in Arizona, I am always sad to part from my kids and my girlfriends. We have squeezed just about as much into the last 4 days as two 'old' folks can. We've witnessed another leg of Katie's success as a graduate from the apprenticeship program, celebrated Tim's birthday and finally met Steve (of Steve and Irish fame). Irish baked a killer pumpkin cheesecake and made me a beautiful Halloween bracelet with beads she swiped from Tory's stash...thanks to both of them for the new 'pretty' I will think of both of them everytime I wear it. Sunday we partied with the Perry family... good food, fun people! Ethan spent the night with us and the weenerdogs got a chance to visit with him too.

Today we are beginning the pack up. Grocery shopping for the trip south, a little 'ahead of time ' cooking... putting away stuff that's been out all summer that we won't need for the trip. Tonite we'll have Tony's pizza one last time with the kids and Grandma and Grandpa. They will miss us, we will miss them. So much fun, so little time.

Thanks to friends and family here in Kitsap County who went out of their way to organize their schedules around ours so we could get together. The people we missed seeing due to circumstances beyond our control, hope we see you next time. And thanks to our hosts who have allowed us to camp in their spare yard.

Our daughter recently completed a four year apprenticeship and last night we all attended the graduation ceremony. While we are not surprised at her success we are none the less very proud of her accomplishment. Her brother, pictured on the left, came from Maryland to join the celebration. Paige and I relish every chance to be with the two of them.

Mending scratches

So back on October 13, 2008 we were hit (and run) in Kingman AZ on our way to Apache Junction. The culprit was caught and his insurance paid off. The plan has been to have the repairs done here in Bremerton, by our friend Forrest, this summer. And so it goes. It has taken most of the summer to get the right weather for painting outside in the Great Pacific Northwest. The first picture is the original damage.

The front end in primer after the surface repairs were completed.

Now with new color and clear applied; waiting to dry.

The paper and tape came off and the lights and hatch are reinstalled; all is as it was before, maybe better.

In every RV'ers life it will happen and last light, yes last night it was our turn. The local tire gypsy arrived with just a few hours notice to install six new tires on our home. Arrangements have been under way for a couple of weeks and when the call came it was time to get out of the way. Obviously these two have done this before and if not for a stubborn hubcap on the left rear they would have been done in less than 1 and a half hours (5:50-7:40PM). That is six 295/75X22.5 16ply tires removed, dismounted, mounted and reinstalled all without having to take the coach anywhere and with only one power tool (pneumatic impact wrench). These guys work hard for a living. Thanks to BT Mobil ("Mobull"as it says on the truck) Tire for a job well done.

Remember a few posts back I had pictures of me learning to make lampwork beads? WHAT FUN!!!!!! Of couse it comes as no suprise that now I want a torch and all the stuff that goes with bead making. I've used a few of the beads I've made over the summer to make a couple of bracelets that I am proud of. Maybe I can sell bracelets to buy the torch?

Tank Art

A few of you who have suffered through my droning on about my plan to repaint the gas tank on my bike may have wondered if it would ever happen. I too wonder the same thing but my family made this wish come true. My friend Scott suggested to them that this was gift they could give which was sure to both surprise and please. The design I had focused on was originally painted on the 1933 Harley-Davidsons. Harley-Davidson's sales had plummeted from 21,000 in 1929 to 3,703 in 1933 and the art-deco "eagle" design was painted on all gas tanks that year as part of the Motor Company’s attempt to revitalize sales. This marked the beginning of a long history of Motor Company graphic designs on Harley-Davidson motorcycles. The tank art on my tank is now complete and the process was as amazing as the result. A slightly damaged used tank was purchased from EBay and repaired and repainted by my friend Forrest. I adapted the original design to the modern tank shape and Forrest laid the design out and made the magic happen, then we handed the tank off to Doug (the Striper) who applied the gold-leaf, lettering and pin stripes. Back in Forrest’s hands the tank was painted again, this time with clear; once dry it was color sanded, buffed and polished. In every way the result exceeded my vision and expectations. Many thanks to everyone who played a part.

I don't really have anything earthshattering to report. I notice that it's been awhile since there was a post here.... one of the blogs I read pretty regularly calls it 'blogstipation'. Hmmmm.

Our ocean trip got cut short so there was no report there. We've had some family stuff to work thru and haven't been doing much else. I have managed to sneak away a couple of times to make beads. I went to the Sock Summit in Oregon.... it was a yarn/fiber thing. I had such a good time, I didn't take pictures. There was yarn and fiber and beer and Voodoo Donuts- YUM to all of it!

One of the things I made to take on the ocean trip was Jalapeno Rhubarb Chutney for our friend Tim. Tim likes HOT food. REALLY HOT. The Chutney didn't really make the TimHOT scale but it was tasty so I made some more. Yes, I plan to bring some to Apache Junction.

Dave is close to getting the new gas tank for his bike, I'm sure he'll post pictures when that's complete.

It was a hit and run, as we are now in Ocean Shores WA for a few days (short trip, back in one day). Weather is cooler but for the ocean was very pleasant. I spent time last night getting the bike cleaned up after the nearly 4000 miles from the Spud Run. On our way to the ocean we stopped for propane in an RV park along the way. Oh well!

Spud Run Epilogue: Home Again

Up at 4:30AM and on the road at 6AM the remaining four of us left Idaho for points west via US-2. One dropped off near Vantage to land in Thorp. Then there were three up and over I-90 to SR-16, where two cut for the Ollala area. I continued on SR-16 to Bremerton, arriving before 2:30PM. It is good to be back but the past two weeks have been an extraordinary series of twisties, sweepers, grades, and vistas. Many thanks to my four friends who made it all possible.

Spud Run, Day 10: (Yes I know this entry is a day late, web access was non existent last night).

Riggins to Coeur d’Alene, a 275 mile run north along the Salmon and Clearwater Rivers, with sweeping and twisting ribbons of asphalt. We slipped off the main road (US-95) briefly to climb the Old White Bird Grade from White Bird to Poe Saddle, this a single strip of pavement with no center line or fog lines and only the occasional guardrail. Ridden at speed it can be thrilling as it carves it's way north. At Grangeville we took SR-13 along the Clearwater River north through Kooskia onto US-12 then SR-3 to St Maries for lunch. From St Maries we rode north along the eastern shore of Coeur d’Alene on SR-97, where the jumped on I-90 to ride west 8 miles to the end of the Spud Run. This journey has exceeded anything I imagined during the 12 months of planning. Our Road Captain nailed every mile, packing as much of the very best roads into 10 extraordinary days, thanks! Our Accommodation Czar had every stop secured making it effortless day after day. Local knowledge was often provided our buddy. Moral and welfare was covered by the master of his domain, keeping us on a straight and nearly narrow path. My job is a mystery to all, so I am just lucky to be in the mix.

Spud Run: Day 9

Spud Run, Day 9: Boise to Riggins via Nampa, (285 miles); and way too much fun. We delayed out departure from Boise so one of us could buy/install a new rear tire so we didn’t gat way until noon. With the mileage and the time zone change we still reached Riggins ID before 4PM. The roads were sweeping, twisty, scenic and occasionally straight as an arrow. As a result there are no pictures. The road was just to challenging to permit any camera action. Weather was warm and allowed shirtsleeve riding nearly all day.

Spud Run, Day 8: Ketchum to Boise, 319 miles and 11 turns. Let’s just say south central Idaho has enough room to build roads, so the needed curves can be far and few. Weather was good with a little more wind than we’d like but arrived safe and all is well. Dinner was at the Kodiak Grill, formally known as the Hill Top Café prior to an unfortunate kitchen fire. This establishment was once a featured on an episode of Food Networks “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives”.

Spud Run, Day 6: From Cody WY west through Yellowstone to the town of West Yellowstone with a brief stop to see Old Faithful and the Old Faithful Inn. From West Yellowstone we rode to Dillon MT for the night. All in all it was a very good day. Our entrance into Yellowstone was early enough on a Saturday to miss the lines and the public was backed up for miles waiting to get into the part as we departed on the west end. There was some rain and some heavy rain just before arriving here in Dillon, not enough to spoil the ride.

Spud Run, Day 5: What a Day! (269 miles) Left Bozeman at 7AM in a light rain and headed to the Gardiner/NE entrance to Yellowstone. The rain quit before entering the park and we followed the road east to US 212 over Beartooth Pass into Red Lodge MT for lunch. Let me just say that the road through the park was perfect with vistas, buffalo and bears. Beartooth Pass leads one to the “Top of the World”. There were several area of road construction between the eastern border of the park and the summit but still all that dirt was a very small price to pay. From the summit to Red Lodge the road snakes out of the mountains, which defines the smile on very motorcyclist's face. We are now in Cody, WY for the night.

A 300+ mile ride from Missoula to Bozeman with twisty bits and long straight prairie rides. It was cold riding until about 10AM then warm all the way from Helena, very nice! Our lunch stop was pure serendipity. A need for gas brought us to Wilsall MT and the Wilsall Bar & Cafe. For myself I order the Cob Salad with huckleberry vinaigrette and was presented with a generous portion of fresh, clean spinach with roasted chicken breast, Ham, Provolone cheese, hard boiled egg, tomato and the rest. But the huckleberry vinaigrette dressing was fit for everything from salad to pancakes. Huckleberries are to Montana as peaches are to Georgia.

Spud Run, Day 3: A short 100 miles or so from Missoula to the Summit of Lolo Pass just across the Idaho border. US-12 from Missoula to the summit is an entertaining road and the morning air was brisk and very refreshing. We retuned to town in time for lunch and a visit to the local Harley Shop before the relaxing begins, but you will never know it from the pictures posted here.. Two of our group have relatives here so they will take time this afternoon to visit with them and the rest of us have a halve day off. Some pool, steam bath and laundry have consumed the afternoon.

Spud Run, Day 2: From Kalispell we rode north and east to the west entrance to Glacier National Park, which has been open only a couple of weeks so far this year. Weather has been warm (hot to some) but perfect in my book. The camera battery died a few miles into the park, so I’ll have to rely on my friend for more pictures at a later date. The park was very busy and crowded but the scenery is more than anything I had imagined. Will have to return and spend more time. The Spud Run is more about the ride than anything else. From the east side of the park we rode west on US-2 and then south on SR-83 connecting with I-90 and into Missoula for the night (370 miles).

Spud Run, Day 1 (third day out): First the pre-ride ride recap. Bremerton to Thorp on Saturday and a very pleasant afternoon at Scott’s summer hideout. Scott and I headed out Sunday morning early for Coeur D’Alene ID, taking several lesser traveled roads along the way, we still arrived at noon. Today, the first day, with all of us in tow, Steve our planning organizer led us though the hills and dales of northern Idaho and Montana to Kalispell.

Ride for food

Food: A common theme in many many recreations. Food can be a recreation unto it's self, but from personal experience I recommend moderation. Saturday broke with clear skies and the promise of warmer weather, which did not disappoint. A few days ago a plan was hatched by a group of riding/eating enthusiast to visit our mutual friend Scott in eastern Washington (state) near Ellensburg. We (four of us) met in the little waterfront town of Kingston WA to cross to the east side of Puget Sound via a Washington State Ferry. From the eastern shore we use rode over Stevens Pass (US-2) through Leavenworth WA (nothing like Kansas) to US-97, otherwise known as Blewett Pass to Ellensburg. We met Scott at his current summer camp about three miles west and a mile or so north of I-90. He was ready for us with a generous lunch and a chance to discuss our up coming motorcycle ride through Idaho, western Montana and northwestern Wyoming. After lunch Scott lead us out of town through the favorite Yakima River Canyon Rd, where he turned back and we continued to US-12 and SR-410 (aka Chinook Pass). Of all the highway passes through the Washington Cascade Mountains it offers perhaps the best view of Mt. Rainer. From the summit west bound there is a cascade of switchbacks before the road settles into a long course following the normal flow of water to the west. Once out of the woods the ride is a meat run from Enumclaw WA home. All in all 400 miles for lunch in the best of company is a day very well spent.

Last fall when we were here (in Kitsap County), my friend Tory offered to show me how to make Lamp-work beads. She learned a few years ago and she is an artist... her beads are so beautiful. I thought 'there is no way I can do that' but thought it would be fun to try. So when we returned for the summer, I got my chance. I will never be as good as she is, but it is very fun... alot like walking and chewing gum and rubbing your head and patting your stomach all at the same time with a 2500 degree flame involved! I managed to make a few beads under her tutelage, and I was suprised at how well they turned out. I'm hooked. I won't ever have my own set up, but am grateful to be able to use hers once in awhile.

Weenerbago Ramblings

There used to be a show on NPR called 'The Bryant Park Project'. One of the features of the show was called 'The Bryant Park Ramble'. The 'BPP' had fallen in the face of budget cuts and I kind of miss it. As I ride along in the passenger seat of the motor home, I think of stuff that could qualify as 'ramblings' so here we go.
We came west this morning thru Washington's Wine country. There were lots of vineyards. There were orchards. I suspected that some of the trees were cherry trees cuz it's that time of year. I was sure some of them were apple orchards cuz that's one of the things Washington State is (or at least used to be) famous for. There were fields of stuff growing. The corn is easy even when it's just little. Onions are pretty easy too. At 50+ miles an hour, sometimes it's tough to tell. Some fields are labeled. I love that! I think all fields should be labeled. I know farmers have better things to do than go out and post signs saying what's growing, but it makes for more entertaining passing by.
Some places in the midwest, we drive thru the 'meat and veg' areas... cows on one side of the road and corn on the other. Then there are the soybean fields. Tofu on one side, and steak on the other? I told you it was a ramble.
And while we're at it, at the risk of sounding like Andy Rooney on 60 Minutes.... could we do something about drawing around the states and labeling them? It would be easier to figure out where you are as you fly over. Let's face it, 'they' have pretty much taken most of the fun out of flying, it could at least be informative!

What's going on?

We're in Nampa, Idaho. It's 9:11 pm Mountain Daylight Time. It is still broad daylight. I can see the sun just disappearing in the west. 9 o'clock at NIGHT. I guess we've been in the south too long. I used to love being able to work in the yard til nearly 10 pm, but I guess I forgot. We should be back in Kitsap County at the end of the week. I'm looking forward to seeing Katie and Dave's folks and all of our friends.

Arches National Park

Today it was arches, hoodoos and a lizard. Perhaps because it was Saturday but many of the lookouts were crowded so in at least one case we missed a walk to a view point for a couple of significant arches. What we did see was stunning. I wonder though where are all the medium and small rocks. There are large/huge rocks and sand, little or no gravel/pebbles. Missed the picture of the lizard. I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

17 mile Drive into the Valley

M-ahhh-nument Valley. Yet another spot you've seen on TV and in movies for years, but you have to see it in person.

We decided not to take the guided tour (starting at $40/person for 2 hours) and took the Jeep into the wild. Not really so wild, but certainly bumpy and dusty. We did see one lizard in middle of the road but he was not so impressed with us. It took us about 2 1/2 hours to make the 17 mile loop but it was truly amazing.

When we got back from this, Dave and I got back in the car and drove over to Four Corners. I have been wanting to see this, even tho' I know it's now believed to be in the wrong place. Scott stayed with the dogs and we drove an hour and a half, saw the 'monument' bought some fry bread and hopped back in car and returned to the coach.

Tomorrow we say good-bye (for a little while) to Scott. He is going a little farther east and we are moving north. We will see him again probably in July. He is good company and we wish him fun adventures.

Monument Valley part one

A short day today from Flagstaff to Goulding's RV Park (Resort?) in Monument Valley. It's possibly the most picturesque campground we've ever camped in. I will take some pictures later.... it's after cocktail time here and we seem to have missed lunch (hic). I did take some pictures on the way into the campground. The first one shows sheep who have had their summer haircuts. I want to know, Where's the wool? Tomorrow we will go for a drive in the jeep, more pictures!

US-89A Just Possible the Best Motorcycle Ride in AZ

Scott and I headed out this morning riding west on I-40 mostly to Ash Fork AZ and then south on US-89 to Prescott AZ where we turn east on US-89A. US-89A returns to I-17 just south of Flagstaff. In the process it winds up and down through the mountains, passing through Jerome, Cottonwood, and Sedona. Traffic was generally light and the weather was warm enough. Arizona has solved budget shortfalls for road maintenance, they have signs made that warn "Rough Road Next 10 miles". It seems that if you set these up at 10 mile intervals road maintenance is no longer a budget issue. Despite the rough roads the ride was excellent. First Leg of the Season

Days end finds us in Flagstaff AZ with sunny weather lacking the heat of the desert. This leg was a shakedown for our new tow setup. Gone is the tow-dolly and in it's place the Jeep is towed flat and the bike rides on it's lift. We are still 60' long but the setup/breakdown is quicker and easier too.

The bad part about leaving this time of year is there's no one there to wave 'good-bye'! It will be fun in the fall when there are people coming in and you can run out and say 'Hi! How was your summer, Welcome back!'

The Time Has Come

Well the time has finally arrived to move on for the summer. We stayed longer than usual so I could take a class at Tempe Yarn and Fiber to learn a process called 'Nuno Felting'. The process is long and sometimes tedious but the result is beautiful. I went with the idea that I might make some Christmas gifts.... probably not. I was pleased with the scarf I made but not sure I have the wherewithal to do it again.

When that was over, we were able to slip away to San Diego for a couple of days to see Ethan. He is there overseeing some Mid-Shipmen from the Naval Academy for part of their summer school experience. We didn't get lots of time to visit as he was busy getting people organized but it was fun to watch him work. Mostly for me it's just being there with him and not what we 'do'.

We left the dogs with Grandma Scooter and Herbie in Sun City West. They are now sure they don't want a dog of their own! As for the dogs, they slept all the way back to our side of the valley (an hour at least) and mostly for the next two days!

Dave and Scott went for one last float in the pool. The park management has turned off the heat so it was only warmish. Of course, it's still about 101 degrees outside everyday now.....

So now, we have all of our stuff stuffed back into the motorhome and are mostly ready to take off in the morning. It won't be a long day but it will be good to go north a little where it's not so hot.

Trussed Up Like a HOG

As some may know we are preparing to begin our summer travels. This year we have added a motorcycle lift to the coach and will flat tow the Jeep in lieu of the Tandem Tow Dolly. Hopefully this will simplify access to the Jeep and the motorcycle.

We seem to be in Arizona for some of the big weather milestones. The first year we were here, it was over 120 days without rain. We thought that was great as it was the middle of the rainy season in Washington. This year they (the weather people on tv) are counting the days of over 100 degree weather (yipes) and also the fact that has been at least 10 degrees hotter than normal for this time of year!

So today it was 108 degrees and a passing shower system went over and rained on us a little bit. It was hard to hear over the air conditioning so we went outside to have a look and sure enough. Dave had washed the car earlier so of course it was his fault... the rain that is. The drops dried nearly as soon as they hit the pavement. Crazy

And yes, it's my fault we are still here! Dave said we could leave after there had been 5 days over 100 degrees in a row. That happened sometime ago. I signed up for a Nuno felting class at Tempe Yarn and Fiber that is this coming weekend, so here we are... once again, fiber related. sigh.

The good news is, since we will be here anyway, we are hopping over to San Diego next week to see Ethan who will be there with a group of mids from the Naval Academy. Cool beans.
